Just Be Yourself

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment" --Ralph Waldo Emerson

For a while now, I've been trying to plant the seed so-to-speak in my son's mind that it might be a good idea for him to play soccer. Both Eddie and I played growing up so naturally we would LOVE for our kids to, but only if they choose. I'm not going to force anything on them (except maybe to learn an instrument).

As a volunteer for Jadon's school field day/jog-a-thon fundraiser, I got to play with the kids during a special recess out on the field. I got Jadon to play soccer with me and some of hims friends. The kid's got game. I always knew he could be pretty good if he chose to practice and work at it. But seriously, he was out maneuvering kids who had been playing for a couple years already.

So for Eddie's birthday I got him a 4-person family pack of tickets to see the Salt Lake Real v Chivas USA MLS soccer game in LA. He was going to take his three brothers but one of them couldn't go so Jadon begged to take his spot. "I just want to get out of town for a little bit," he exclaimed. I thought maybe the game would inspire him to want to play soccer and once again, I asked if he thought he might like to play. His reply, "Only if I can wear my hoodie while I play." The kid will not take it off. "Probably not," I said.

Then he caught me off-guard by saying, "Mom, I know you and Dad probably want me to play soccer since you both like it so much. But aren't you the one who is always saying to be myself? And that's what I'm doing." OUCH. Was I that obvious? Thanks for the reminder Jadon.

I love that kid!
